You really want to upgrade to at least 2.3, if not 2.4 (which is
current, I think 2.5 is still in beta.) 2.2 had many problems that
were fixed in 2.3. On the other hand, only one of your problems would
relate to that:

I believe (though I'll have to double check) that v5b5 does the right
thing on solaris 2.3 (but solaris 2.4 needs different code and I
haven't got that fixed yet.)
