Yes, I know about this problem --- however, I've held off doing anything
about it because I've been planning on completely revamping how the krb5
configuration file is going to be done. (Short version: an integrated
configuration file, DOS/Windows .ini file format, user overridable with
environment variables and ~/.krb5rc files --- the last so that you don't
need to be root to authenticate to another Kerberos realm that isn't in
the system /etc/krb.conf file. Ultimtaely, once this is all done, the
name of the new-style configuration file will be /etc/krb5.conf.)

This will also allow certain configuration options which are currently
compile time option, and create a configuration file where these things
can be easily configured on a run-time basis --- which various vendors
who distribute binaries have requested.

There is partially written code to parse these configuration files, and
when I have more time to commit to paper the design which I have in
mind, you'll be seing more on this topic.
