kpasswd problem

I think I have a reasonable installation of V5. User validataion seems to
work fine. I am now having a problem with password changing. When I run
kpasswd it prompts me for the old password but then gives me the following
error:
kpasswd: cannot contact server (Invalid message type).
Can someone tell be where to look next? Thanks.
