Kerberos V or IV?

I'm setting up a machine that is intended to run "secure" services for
our server (NetSpace). I had a Kerberos IV server running at one point,
but the hard drive croaked before I really got it going.
The server will be a Linux machine.

I made the kerberos server from the MIT source, with the help of a patch,
supplied by one of Brown's sys-admins. However, it seemed that some of
the services were a bit buggy, and the compile was a pain.
Just for kicks, I downloaded version V, which was a breeze to make.

So which one should I use?

My main goal is to get encrypted telnet working, but most of the machines
that people will be using will have Kerberos IV, so I'll need the
backwards compatibility if I use V. I may also want to try some cross
realm authentication with Brown University, which runs a version IV server.
I've heard that the telnet client distributed with the sources is
not secure. Is the one on net-dist any better?

Thanks in advance for any advice you have,

Brian Perkins
