You might also consider using the Secure Shell (SSH).

It does encryption and secure authentication, is easy to install and
use, and is freely available. It runs on many versions of Unix and
there should be PC version available shortly (probably within a week
or two). There is also work being done on a Macintosh version.

We've been working with both Kerberos and SSH and, although there is
some overlap, each has its own stengths. We're using both and
plan to continue with each, using each it where works best for us.
For users scattered around the country and connecting to SDSC, it will
probably be easier to use SSH. For larger groups of users connecting
to SDSC, Kerberos will probably be preferred.

See the Secure Shell home page ( http://www.cs.hut.fi/ssh/ ) for more
information.
