one alternative to consider is the "aname to lname" mapping that is in
both v4 and v5 and is practically unused in both. The idea is that the
local user name is unrelated to the kerberos name, but you maintain a
mapping as needed. Given how rarely it is used, the support is
probably full of holes, but it might be a good starting place...
