What happens when the master node fails?

I was wondering if anyone in this newsgroup have had experience
with what you you'll have to do if the node with the master
database should go down and stay down for a few days?
Is there a way to setup a "cold" standby server to take
over the down server? In that case, how do you keep the
databases in sync?
Keep in mind that we must be able to do database updates
on the "cold" server once it is ready to take over the
failed server.
