This is not completely true. The Kerberos 5 code has
significant hooks for backwards compatability with v4 realms. These
hooks mostly work at the level of the KDC, meaning that a v5 server
can support both v4 and v5 applications. Also, a facility is provided
to convert v5 tickets to v4 tickets, so it is possible toupgrade from a v4 server to a v5 server.
Art> Is there an _estimate_ of release of a non-beta version?
No official estimate has been released to my knowledge.
Art> How about a wild guess?
Art> Before 1997 ?
This wouldn't be that unreasonable. I.E. We certainly don't
expect to take another five years to come out with Kerberos 5 1.0. I
think we're expecting to have a non-beta release by then. Also, note
that several vendors already have Kerberos5 products available; you
might want to check the FAQ for comp.protocols.kerberos, posted here
and available on rtfm.mit.edu.
