You're probably using the broken SYSV install program.
But what suprises me is that you have a "/usr/bin/install",
Solaris 2.x ships with two install programs:
/usr/sbin/install - the useless SYSV install
/usr/ucb/install - the ucb install, as required by Kerberos.
X11, most PD apps.
