Thanks for your thoughts.  I am intrigued by your statement that
"kadmin" needs to be in the database; I have certainly overlooked this
step.  kadmin needs to be in the database?  ???  As a principal??  From
within kdb5_edit, I would type "ank kadmin"?  What password would I
use, anything?

And I mistyped at the end.  The "#bin/sclient foo" line should have
read "#bin/sclient test", where "test", as you can see, is a defined
principal.  And "sample" has a random key assigned, too.  With this
modification, does your suggestion still stand?
