We're using a release of CVS that is not the public release (it has a
particular implementation of "dead file" support.) Thus it isn't clear
that you'd be able to use the repository effectively.

The repository would also be somewhat larger than the actual release,
what with the deleted and renamed files, as well as the previous
versions. Later snapshots could only be made as entire repositories,
diffs (of RCS files) wouldn't be practical... it would actually make
it *harder* for you to preserve local changes.

It also wouldn't make it any easier to get changes from the net --
diffs against public releases are the best we can do anyhow...
