It *does* get defined by gcc (which is all I ever test with, since my
SunPro-cc license server is on the other side of the continent, and
crashes often enough to break my builds anyway :-) and I'm pretty sure
(though not 100%) that there's some SVR4 document that says it should
be.

Is there a sunpro-solaris identifying define? If so, I can check for
that in autoconf and use it to define __svr4__. Thanks very much for
identifying this, as well as for the success report.

There is someone at MIT working on new API doc (given that a lot of
changes have gone in since the last time the doc was worked on, 6
entire months ago :-) and I'll leave it to Ted to comment on the
stability of the interface -- it is the intent that the API include
the forwarding code, but there may be futher changes to what the API
actually is.
