I believe I had this problem myself when I first installed MIT K4 last year.
It turned out that the sample server code was buggy and insisted in looking in
the 'wrong' place for the srvtab file (where it finds its key). Apparently,
the code was not honoring my top-level directory settings and was looking
exactly in '/etc/srvtab'. When I moved my srvtab file there, it worked. (I
hope my memory is serving me correctly here).
However, I had no trouble with the supplied rlogin/rlogind, so I gave up
worrying about the 'sample' program.
Hope this helps.
