To the extent that this request is not oxymoronic, I recommend RFC's
1508 (Generic Security Service Application Program Interface) and 1509
(Generic Security Service API : C-bindings.) Certainly comprehensive,
and about as readable (thanks to the authors, J. Linn and J. Wray,
respectively) as such inherently hard-core technical specifications
can get.
