Transport security reqs with Kerberos?

Pardon the ignorance, I am just getting my feet wet with the
subject of network security and such.  I think I pretty much
understand how Kerberos works as an authentication mechanism
for clients and servers in a network.  One question I have is:
are there any requirements on the specific transport protocol
being used (i.e. TCP/IP, OSI, SNA, proprietary,...) to 
participate in the security aspects (for instance, at connection
establishment, or encryption on the data path)?  Or, is the
security handled above the transport, by the application?
