V5 under autoconf does *not* use the MIT DES implementation. It uses
the Ferguson code (or what was left of it by the time I got it folded
into Cygnus V4.)
However, it was built with -g and without (but never with -O) so there
is still the problem mentioned. (I doubt gcc has any such problems --
but we're building with the native compilers to handle the greatest
challenge :-)
