krb5kdc - won't run - rcache

The configuration, compilation, and installation seem to have gone
just fine. However, when I try to start up krb5kdc, I get the
following error:
ertle@wildthing (131)> ./krb5kdc
krb5kdc: Permission denied in replay cache code while expunging replay
cache 'dfl:'
I stepped through the source with a debugger, and found that the
rcache is created OK, then just before the expunge command the
variable that keeps track of the name, directory, etc of rcache gets
re-initialized.
Anybody have any ideas?
