Well, it looks like that was it. I rebuilt 1.4.1 without thread support
and the above problem goes away.
As it happens, my production KDC is still on Solaris, where this doesn't
seem to be an issue. I'm expecting to upgrade the KDC from 1.3.4 to 1.4.1
fairly soon.
