I don't think I had to do anything tricky. It was
./configure --prefix=/krb5 --without-tcl --without-krb4 \
CC=cc CFLAGS="-O -qmaxmem=-1"
I used vac 6.0.0.8, xlC.aix50.rte 6.0.0.14, and xlC.rte 6.0.0.0.
