I'll add this to Ted's observation:  when bringing the daemon(s) up on
a Sun, you have to beware of conflicts with portmap-assigned RPC
daemon ports, which generally tend to fall in the 700-ish range.  When
such a conflict occurs, you may get the same error.  There are a
couple of ways to handle this in the long term, and the solution
depends on how (and whether) your local yp (oops, NIS) is set up.  Sun
supposedly has an official bug report about the situation, so I expect
a fix of some sort might emerge from them sooner or later.
