Hello everyone,
A member of the IS Home Pages team pointed me to recent e-mail about a
draft Web page called "MIT Software Distribution." I have some concerns
about this page that I want to get out on the table.
From the draft page's URL -- http://web.mit.edu/software/ -- one might
assume that it is the main IS page for software. But in fact the main IS
entry point for software is at http://web.mit.edu/is/products/ The
Software section on that page includes links to supported Mac, PC, and
Athena software, as well as a link to net-dist and to site licensed
software.
Just to round out the picture, within a short time frame, the Mac and PC
links will be replaced by the ones found on
http://training.mit.edu/products/test.html. Links to the Certificates
versions of software can easily be added to both the current Mac and PC
software listings, as well as to the new pages.
Given this, it is not at all clear to me that we should have a separate MIT
Software
Distribution page for applications that requires MIT Certificates for download.
If everyone is amenable, I would like to discuss the best fit for the
material on the draft page *before* it is announced to Service and Support
team leaders. I would be happy to devote an IS Home team meeting to this
discussion. We meet on Fridays at 9:30am in N42-286.
