Hi Kris,
My 2c: the hostname lookup form hasn't worked in years. I think we
should remove all references to it.
Perhaps we can replace the form with a page which explains how to
figure out if a specific hostname is already taken. The HD has a web
page with some info on this topic:
<http://mit.edu/helpdesk/ipaddr.html>, under "Available Hostnames".
It would be nice to have that kind information in a more logical
place, such as /is/help/network/. If you're interested, let me know
and I'll send you a draft. (The text in /helpdesk/ipaddr.html could
use some updating, otherwise I'd say just grab that text and use it.)
