Hello-

I'm writing with several updates on a recent problem regarding the
Tether documentation web page for Windows NT. As some of you know,
that web page was reported missing a few days ago. The file had
simply been deleted *.

Here are some updates:

- We now have two known customer complaints about the missing Tether docs.

- I have posted a short explanation at the original URL:
http://web.mit.edu/winnt/tether/
It directs customers to contact the Help Desk so they can get a paper copy.

- I had thought this would be a quick fix, but it's not. Server Ops
let me look through a 2/29 AFS backup tape, and the file wasn't
there. This means that the file's been gone for at least 9 days.
I've asked Ops to dig out a tape from late December, but that's going
to take some time.

- I would like the Pubs folks to search their hard drives for the
original document. It's probably called "nttether.html". I'd also
like to know who the original author was.

- If we can't recover the missing file from the AFS backups, or
someone's hard drive, I may ask the Pubs folks if they're willing to
re-write the document. I have a paper copy they can use.

If anyone has more information about this problem, please let me know. Thanks.

* If you're curious, the exact location of the missing is:
/afs/athena.mit.edu/org/i/is/help/winnt/tether/nttether.html
As stated above, I put a dummy file in its place so customers will
know where to get Tether docs.
