Here's how to get to the proto-prototype of a WAIS interface
to ejournals that we demo'd at last Tuesday's meeting:

add wais and add mitlibs

xw starts xwais client (x version; b-3 release)

swais starts swais client (simple wais - tty version)
The vax version of this doesn't seem to want to work.
Run swais from an rt or dial in to athena-rt.dialup.mit.edu
for now. Haven't done much fooling with swais. There are some
obvious but probably minor problems.

To get the ejournal source files, such as they are -
copy
/mit/mitlibs/wais/sources/ej-source-directory.src
to
~/wais-sources
(If you haven't yet used xwais, ~/wais-sources will
be set up automatically the first time you use it.
If you start out with swais, you'll have to create
the ~/wais-sources directory first or it won't work.
Either way, copy ej-source-directory.src into the directory.)

Search ej-source-directory.src for for the string "src" and you'll find all
the ejournal sources (six of them, as of today). Save them, then use those
sources to search the ejournals we've loaded so far.

Since we don't have a server going now, only full-time access is through
Athena.

If you add wais and start xwais with the standard command (xwais) on a vax
machine, you'll get the older b-2 release. b-3 version started by "xw"
is considerably better.

For those of you who weren't at the meeting, this is only an experimental
investigation of WAIS as a mode of access to electronic journals.

Any suggestions, etc. are welcome.

Carter
