Bob Kahn is the person behind the original Arpanet/Internet; now he is
head of the Corporation for National Research Initiatives, encouraging
farther-out research. Note that his abstract gives as the only examples
of the talk subject "digital libraries and knowledge banks". He usually
gives a good talk.

MIT-EECS COLLOQUIUM
MONDAY 4-5 PM
APRIL 6
EDGERTON HALL 34-101
NETWORK BASED INFORMATION SERVICES
ROBERT E. KAHN
CORP. FOR NATIONAL RESEARCH INITIATIVES
Over the past twenty years, major changes have occured in
the network user and information services. The basic communications
services, consisting of reliable virtual circuits and "best effort"
packet delivery have become available at higher speeds, but they remain
essentially unchanged otherwise. A level above these communications
services are such capabilities as e-mail, remote login, file transfer,
and remote job entry. With the introduction of LANs, high performance
personal computers and workstations, more advanced network services are
now possible. Many of these offer the potential to greatly expand the
use of networks and are likely to become wide- spread within the next
decade. The evolution of these services will be reviewed, and services
such as digital libraries and knowledge banks will be discussed.
