LITA Programmer/Analyst Interest Group
Monday, January 27, 8:30-11:00 a.m.
San Antonio Convention Center - Patio B
***** IS THERE LIFE AFTER SGML ? *****
The Programmer/Analyst Interest Group will continue its exploration of
full text databases at its meeting at the ALA Mid-Winter Conference in
San Antonio. We'll start off with two presentations:
Marianne Gaunt, Project Director for the Center for Electronic Texts
in the Humanities and AUL for Research and Undergraduate Services at
Rutgers, will give an introduction to the Text Encoding Initiative
(TEI). TEI is a major international project to disseminate
guidelines for the interchange of machine-readable texts.
John Price-Wilkin, Data Services Librarian and English Literature
Selector at the University of Michigan, will discuss on technical
aspects of a campus full text system using SGML-conformant text.
Following these reports we hope to hape a lively discussion of
full text encoding, storage, delivery, and related topics. Anyone
with interest, experience, questions or comments is invited to
participate.
There will be a business meeting after the discussion to elect a
new vice-chair and a secretary for the SIG, and to talk about
future discussions and programs.
