Om Friday, August 27, the MIT Libraries and IS (Information Systems) Steering Group confirmed the Libraries' decision to pursue discussions with NOTIS Systems Inc. about providing a new library operating system to support acquisitions, cataloging, circulation, and serials management.

This decision means that the Libraries and IS will be conferring with NOTIS about the Horizon system, its new client/server-based product. These discussions are aimed at reaching a formal agreement with NOTIS to install Horizon at MIT and replace our present Geac 8000 system.

This is the culmination of an intensive evaluation and selection process conducted by the Libraries this past spring and summer that involved a broad segment of the MIT community. The decision to continue discussions with NOTIS has broad and enthusiastic support from all groups in the Libraries and in IS. We feel that Horizon embodies a future-oriented perspective that is consistent with the vision of the Distributed Library Initiative.

We are pleased to have reached this critical step in the process to implement a new system and I am most grateful to everyone who participated in the evaluation process. We look forward to the forthcoming discussions with NOTIS and to a successful outcome.
