Hi,
Please try to be more polite when responding to the Help Desk consultants.
We have no way of knowing when the error messages indicate problems with
net-dist or with the installer or something else. It is very frustrating
when these installers don't work and we don't understand why. It would
also be very helpful to get an explanation of what to do when an installer
doesn't work.

In this case, the students tested connecting to net-dist and verified that
it was up before sending mail to installers (this was in fact our first
thought, that net-dist might be having trouble). We do realize that it is
possible that the mink connection can be refused even after we've
successfully tested net-dist, but there is no way to determine if this is
the case. We of course, only hear from clients when the installation
fails, so it's difficult to know if the problem is with net-dist or the
installer.

Paul's explanation of what to test and what information to provide to
installers is much more complete. I have forwarded it to the Help Desk and
we will begin gathering this information.

One concern with mink.exe (besides these failures) is that when mink.exe
runs, it always pauses at a certain point in the installation, "copying
ftp4w.dll" - at this point it reads "114%". Its a cosmetic bug, but it
gives clients a bad impression of our levels of quality assurance.

thanks,
Alicia
