I am about as red faced as I have been in a long, long time, but
suffice it to say that a cron script I was running was responsible for
looping every message I got from any mailing list that puts its own
submission address in the To: header (as many lists do) back to the
list, once per hour, due to a call to "sendmail -t". Serves me right
for running a script I got from someone else without bothering to
analyze it first. (Naturally, it worked fine for *him* since he does
not subscribe to any mail lists and therefore the To: header never
contained anything but his own address).
My sincere apologies for the inconvenience this undoubtedly caused
everyone on these lists. But it is no longer necessary for anyone to
flame/remind me, or the entire list, about this. It was not done
deliberately to annoy you (despite what some people apparently think),
it was purely an accident. The problem was corrected at 9:30AM MST
(16:30 GMT) yesterday (3/30).
We now return (hopefully) to talking about intrusion detection
systems.
