before there was major domo i wrote mailing list s/w (obligatory
plug: http://www.bcu.ubc.ca/~zaphod/src/2cents.tar.gz :) and it
could define lists into "chatty" and "nonchatty". chatty lists have
all the messages go out so that replies aim back at the list - just
as does ids. For some lists this is a good thing, it promotes
discussion and information sharing. whethor or not it's a good
thing for ids is a different discussion.
however, when you set up a list as "chatty", you need to
1) set an Error-To: line
2) NOT auto-distribute mail from "users" postmaster, daemon,
mail-daemon, mailer-daemon or the other variations that
get generated (i have a list somewhere). these addresses
are only error-message sources and/or error query
addresses.
i don't know what s/w drives the ids list, but it needs some
rethinking. 2cents is available if you want (i still maintain it
- haven't a chance to check out mjr. domo), as is major domo (which
is so popular is must be doing it right).
