m4-167-2 can't start Xlogin

I found m4-167-2 with only a cursor in the lower left corner. I rebooted thte system and ran fsck manually. The machine appeared to be rebooting right until the end. It quit with only a cursor in the lower left coner. After some time a message appeared: "Can't start Xlogin, starting console login." The screen then returned to just a cursor in the corner. The machine does ping. I turned the monitor off and left a note that the WS is down.
