eve is the file server for the pika cluster. At about 2:50am or so this
morning, the tape drive started up and started making nasty noises. Two of
the residents who were in the cluster at the time tried to make it stop, in
the process, hitting the off button. They turned it back on and called me.

I went to check it and found it ready for login, but the tape drive was still
spinning and making all sorts of nasty noises. I checked the syslogs to make
sure the fsck had gone okay, then shutdown the machine, turned it off, and
pulled out the tape drive.

There was a tape cartridge in it, which I managed to remove. Upon getting it
out, I discovered that it was an empty cartridge (No tape in it). I hoped
that now that the tape was out, that everything would be okay, and reboot the
machine. The tape drive continued spinning.

So I powered the machine down again and unplugged the power cable to the tape
drive.

eve seems to be working fine (unless you want to make a tape, obviously). My
priority was getting the cluster up again so that people could get work done.
I didn't care too much about the drive.

Anyway, the drive is probably still stuck "on" and should probably be looked
at.

eve is a MicroVax II with a TK50 tape drive.

Thank you
