Dear Consultants,
For the past four weeks, I have been having trouble with the
high-speed modem pool. I dial 258-7096, and an average of once every
six times, I have a problem with the connection. I normally connect
at 14.4Kbps and LAP-M error correction and V.42bis data compression
with a Practical Peripherals modem. About once in six times, the
connection occurs, but no error correction or data compression is
negotiated. After this, I get a lot of junk on the screen, and my
only recourse is to hang up. The Athena consultant at 253-4435 said
that an intermittant problem like this sounded like a faulty
modem-pool modem or poor line quality. However, my modem reports on
line quality. It has an LCD display which labels the line quality
good, ok, or poor. For example, when call waiting buzzes in, the line
quality downgrades from good to ok. In the instance I am discussing
when I fail to connect to the athena modem, the line quality is always
rated good by my modem display. Therefore, I believe that there is a
faulty modem in the modem pool. Often when I hang up and call in
again, I connect just fine. Sometimes the problem repeats two or
three times before I get a good connection.

Thank you very much for looking into this, and please tell me if there
is other information you would like or tests I should try.

Sincerely,
Andrew M. Rappe
