help with files that I don't own in my home directory

Hi,
after a long hiatus I am once again using my athena account. I find
that there are files in my home directory /mit/susskind whose owner is
a userid #1394 who is no longer in hesiod and has, I suppose, graduated.
Can you change the permissions on these files so I can read them, see if
I want to keep them, and be able to get rid of the rest?
