Subject: IMPORTANT OUTAGE NOTICE

***** IMPORTANT NOTICE, PLEASE READ ME NOW *****

Dear MITnet Users,

This past weekend (as many of you know from the schedule we mailed out
last week) we completed a series of software and microcode updates to
the MITnet backbone routers.

Those updates were supposed to enhance our ability to provide reliable
service on MITnet by fixing some bugs and providing hardware and
software performance improvements.

In reality, we ended up picking up a subtle bug in the router system
software. The effect of this bug has been largely invisible except to
a class of users who employ NFS (the Sun Network File System) to provide
remote file access among workstations using the Unix operating system.

In some cases we've been able to work around the problems with small
changes to user workstation configurations but some of the problems
have eluded solutions.

We have been in touch with our router vendor (cisco Systems). They
have acknowledged the bug and are dispatching new software EPROMs to
fix the problem. We expect to receive this update by tomorrow
(Thursday) morning.

If the software arrives on time, we will prepare to update all the
MITnet routers on Friday morning 3/20, starting at approximately 8AM
and finishing by noontime. Any problems which develop with Appletalk
routing will be resolved shortly after that.

This process will involve short (less than 15 minutes each) outages of
various parts of MITnet throughout the morning of 3/20. We would not
normally do this kind of work after 9AM but in this case, we would
prefer to expedite a solution.

If you have any questions, feel free to write to net-help@mit.edu or
phone x3-4101 for any late-breaking news.

If there are any changes in this schedule, we will notify you as soon
as practical via this mailing list.
