Repeated Swap Read Error Messages

My VS3100 workstation console window keeps displaying messages
like the following:
08:14 pid 3264: swap: read error from swap device
09:14 pid 3269: swap: read error from swap device
10:14 pid 3274: swap: read error from swap device
I haven't noticed any other problems, but these hourly messages
have me worried. What is being complained about, and should I get
something fixed before it blows up?
