  On logging in remotely, we found a single large file which doesn't
really belong on the root partition. 'ls -l /dev/rtpae' showed:
        -rw-rw-r--   1  root    2695168 Jan 21  12:16  rtpae
I suspect that you created this inadvertantly yourself (by mistyping
a backup command). If you delete this file, your root partition should
go back to the normal size.

  These files didn't cause the root partiton to fill up, as they are
located on the /site partition. They are files cached by the machine when
it accesses files stored under AFS. Don't delete them.
