I did reply to the Hotline yesterday but it might have gotten lost.
After Ron Hoffmann reported the problem of a noisy multiport repeater
in 66-080 on Thursday, I checked into the problem around 11:35 AM.
WhatI found was that although the repeater was generating a sound like a
jet taking off, the unit was still supporting the workstations' links to the
MITnet.
The terminal room was at the time occupied by about 8-9 people. So after asking
them to issue a "save" command for any files they were currently working on, I
replaced the MR9000C with a quieter unit.
The entire process took about 2 minutes.
