Hecate was out of service today from around 3:15pm until around 7:15pm.
It hung, with the only visible symptom and only error message logged
about disk 3: it dropped offline, and its lights (but not its LED) were
dark. Attempts to reboot after power cycling disks, tape drive, and even
CPU failed...all hanging with a message about 'tmscp2'. Tmscp2 refers
to a controller for an Exabyte tape drive which is no longer on the
system. DEC field service (along with Brian, Ezra, Carlton who found
and brought over some spacer boards) removed this controller, and
the system successfully booted around 7:15pm.
There is no evidence that any files were lost during this outage.
I should add that Hecate has been one of our most stable fileservers,
and that this event was sudden and unexpected.
