        Greetings
We checked on the situation in 3-370 and it seems that
the Athena workstation is putting out a low (640x480)
resolution and so the panel puts out black.. Perhaps we can
meet with IS at some point tommorow (Sept 5) and remedy the
        problem.

        Thanks

For the record, the Linux command line interface outputs lo-res VGA of
640x480 as the least common denominator video signal that **ALL** video
displays are expected to be able to handle. This is the TEXT oriented
video feed, with NO graphics. I would be VERY surprised if the display
panel and switching systems were unable to handle this signal.

Linux takes this approach because 640x480 is expected to work everywhere
BEFORE anybody tries to run anything graphical or fancy in any way. So
we should definitely pursue making sure this video signal is able to be
displayed, and we should look for the fault OUTSIDE the computer, either
in cables, or malfunctioning switching hardware.
