When I logged in tonight, I noticed a strange-named file in one of my
subdirectories; it was called ?{?o" . When I tried to look at it, by
using "more" or "emacs", I couldn't access it. Since it had 0 bytes,
I decided I didn't need it and tried to remove it using "rm ?{?o"",
but I got an error message like "unmatched .". Then I tried to remove
it by saying remove anything with a final quote (i.e. rm *"), which
still gave me the same error message. Then, I tried to remove it by
saying remove anything that began with a question mark (i.e. rm ?*).
Unfortunately, this deleted everything in that directory.

I know now that I should have been using the command "delete" instead
of "rm", and I will be using "delete" instead of "rm" in the future.
But, I was wondering if somehow I could get that directory restored?
I have sent a question to olc (it hasn't yet been answered), and a
person at SIPB suggested that sending e-mail to hotline may be
helpful. My username is jatsai (@athena), I lost the files just
before midnight on Wednesday October 16, the subdirectory is called
"1.00" (for the Course 1.00-- it is one level below my home
directory), and I believe the last changes were made on October 4.
Actually, I believe I created a couple of "dotfiles" on the evening of
October 15.

Please contact me if I can give more information about what happened
and if you may be able to help me. I very frequently am logged on to
"jatsai@mtl.mit.edu" and check most of my mail there. My office
number is x3-0716.

Thank you for your help,

julie
