Motherjones fell off the Hesiod table...

I've been away since last Wednesday. When I returned to work today, my
VAX3100 had no x-window screen, just garbage down the left. We
eventually figured out how to reboot her, and we do now have the xlogin
window, BUT now when we try to login we get the message that motherjones
can't be found in the hesiod table.
What gives?
