Problems with athena systems

We are experiencing a couple of problems with our athena systems here at
WHOI.
The first problem is that workstations that are served by file server SCUP are
timing out when activating with the message:
Activating workstation...
whoi-dmusys: Timeout while contacting mount daemon on SCUP.MIT.EDU
executing X server: No such file or directory
SCUP seems to boot without error though I have noticed that a number of file
entries in /etc are linked to files on volume /srvd which is not mounted on
the system.
The second problem is that MENHADEN won't activate because, as it says:
Activating workstation...
No Hesiod information available for Menhaden
No Hesiod information available for Menhaden
Whoi-dmusys: Can't resolve name
executing X server: No such file or directory
I have called the hardware hotline three times. I have left two messages (on
Monday 9/23 and Wednesday 9/25) regarding these problems. I have spoken to a
human being once(on Tuesday, 9/24) and was told the information would be given
to the systems people and that, yes there is a problem with Menhaden and hesiod
information and that it would be fixed in 24 hours. It has now been 48 hours
and Menhaden is still down. The students are getting annoyed and wrestless.
