Hi,
This is just a note to let you folks know we're
still experiencing problems with the system at
Woods Hole. Currently, of the four workstations,
only one (squeteague) will even come up with a
login screen. Two (quahog and tautog) continue
to get timeouts when trying to contact the mount
daemon on the local server (scup). This may be
because the mount daemon can't start up on scup.
The remaining workstation (menhaden) reports that
it can't get Hesiod information. It also won't respond
to pings over the networks. Both of these problems
have been around since last Thursday.
To make matters even worse, squeteague comes up
with the error
   xlogin error: can't find pty/tty
   looking for a good pty/tty
It will allow you to login, but exhibits a distressing
tendency to log you off involuntarily (it looks as if
it loses contact with the server). I can usually stay
on for no more than an hour before this occurs. One
other person has told me of experiencing this problem
as well. This has been happening for quite a few months!
The consultants here have been as helpful as they can
be, but they don't know very much about athena or even
UNIX for that matter. The regular athena consultant
is out for the next month on maternity leave. As a regular
athena user I can tell you that any help would be greatly
appreciated!
                  -Anand
