The VAXstation 3100 in my office died Thursday night. I had left the office
logged into athena and returned to find that the machine had rebooted itself
and had died during the fsck of the root file system /dev/rz3a with the error
message => BAD SUPER BLOCK: MAGIC NUMBER WRONG. I then consulted online help
and tried to repair the filesystem damage by booting with b/2 option and then
running fsck manually with the alternate super block option -b 32. I was
prompted to salvage free blocks to which I replied with y and to reboot the
system. Rebooting now hangs up on the next disk file system /dev/rz3g with
the same complaint about a bad super block. I was not able to repair this
partition with "/etc/fsck -b 32 /dev/rz3g". Currently I have turned off the
machine. I and my officemates would greatly appreciate a rapid repair of our
workstation. Thank you,
