David,
Your request to restore your home directory was forwarded to the
Systems Support group. We will attempt to restore your files from a
backup tape made prior to August 22, which is around the time you
believe the files were deleted. This may take a few days, and we will
let you know as soon as the files have been restored to disk.
During August 22-23, there were no changes to the hardware or software
on Talos (the file server on which your home directory resides). In
addition, system changes never result in the loss of user files, and
there is no evidence of a hardware problem on that server during the
interval you mentioned. (In the case of a hardware problem, it is also
unlikely that only the files from one home dircetory would disappear,
leaving the top level directory intact.) So, it is very, very unlikely
that your files were deleted as a result of any systems work. It is
much more likely that a user error caused the deletion.
Again, we'll let you know as soon as the files are restored.
