The Department of Facilities requests your assistance in resolving a
water loss situation. For the past week or so, the Central Utility
Plant staff has reported a significant loss of chilled water. The
water loss comes from pipes that are used for cooling, not drinking,
so the water is not potable. The water meters indicate that on some
days as much as 20,000 gallons of water have been lost. Some daily
loss is anticipated, but this is 10 times higher than normal. The
water usage is not consistent, making it more difficult to determine
the location.
As of today, our investigation has not found the source, which is why
we ask for your help. If you are aware of any experimental uses,
construction or maintenance activities, or see water flowing down a
drain excessively, please contact our Utilities area at
utilities@mit.edu. It is possible that someone may have
inadvertently tapped into a chilled water line improperly. We would
like to show them how their water or cooling needs can be achieved more
effectively. (As a reference a 3/4" hose running freely will waste 7000
gallons per day.)
Thanks you very much for your cooperation.
