Tailgunner has been having some problems -- when I came to the office
today it was down. Desmond (drlcs) rebooted it when it didn't repond to
his logging in after 1/2 hour.

I typed "boot" at the ">>" prompt, then "fsck" at the "#" prompt, and it
came up just fine.

The problem is that the /etc/passwd file is wiped out. The
/etc/passwd.local doesn't exist, but there is a /etc/passwd.local~ which
reads:

> cat /etc/passwd.local~
acevedo:*:2258:101:Gabriel,Raul,DEC at Littleton,5084866908,3544518:/mit/acevedo:/afs/athena.mit.edu/user/a/aceve

These are the contents of /etc/passwd:

> cat /etc/passwd
acevedo:*:2258:101:Gabriel,Raul,DEC at Littleton,5084866908,3544518:/mit/acevedo:/mit/acevedo/bin/set-shell
tompalka:jf4tHSQIYjook:18064:101:thomas palka,tom,11-115,2531923,:/mit/tompalka:/bin/csh

Both passwd files should contain lines for root, deamon, ris, and other
these dudes. I'm not sure if the problem arose from someone manually
editing the /etc/passwd.local file, (which the ~ would indicate in the
filename), but in either case tailgunner isn't working well.

I can't su and fix it manually (for now) because tailgunner doesn't know what
"root" is. Could someone please take a look at it?

thanks,
