Many have had concerns and have asked questions regarding the City of
Cambridge
water supply. The following is the information we have to date:
* The new water treatment plant came on line this past spring after two
years in construction. For the two year construction period all customers
of the city water department were receiving MWRA water. This is the same
water we are now receiving and will be receiving until the plant is
restarted.
* The plant shut down was caused by a power surge originating in the
utility
power grid. As a result, equipment malfunctioned and water backed down the
pipe from the reservoir flooding the plant.
* The City switched to the MWRA system water that was previously used
during
construction and is from the same source millions of Massachusetts
residents are currently using and have been using for years.
* It is expected that the plant will be out of service for at least two
weeks.
* The City has assured us that the water is safe for consumption.
* All City Water Department customers are receiving the same water.
If additional information becomes available it will be sent out.
