As part of our ongoing efforts to conserve energy, the Department of
Facilities will replace steam traps in radiators throughout campus
beginning next week. Over the course of several months over 2700
radiators will be worked on in labs, offices and classrooms.

Facilities has contracted with Aqualine Resources, Inc. to carry out
this project. Aqualine is familiar with the MIT campus having
completed the toilet retrofit program in the academic and housing
buildings at the Institute recently.

Most of the steam trap replacement work will be done during the hours
between 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM. The amount of time to repair or replace
the steam trap is estimated to be approximately one and a half hours
per radiator although many may take less time.

The Department of Facilities has made arrangements for Aqualine to
gain access to all necessary rooms. In order to preserve the
security of labs and offices, Aqualine will take safety precautions.
If the work crew enters a secured space while it is unoccupied, and
someone comes into the room while they are there, Aqualine will ask
the person to leave the room and reenter by using their own key.
That way, Aqualine can be assured that the person has permission to
be in that room.

Prior to performing the work, Aqualine will post door tags in every
room to notify the occupants. An Aqualine representative will also
visit the space the day before work is scheduled to personally talk
to the occupants about the project and to verify that the radiator is
uncluttered by cabinets, office equipment or personal belongings.

The first areas to be worked on are Buildings 2, 4 and 10.
Facilities is currently creating a website that will post the weekly
schedule.

If you have any questions about this project, contact Raul Varela,
mechanical engineer in the Utilities section of Facilities, at
x3-7085.
